It was a good weekend in an administrative way. We did our tax returns and the finances for January. I have £88 to spend in February, thank God Toby is paying for the Valentines Day meal and February is a short month!
On Saturday we had a lie in and then walked into the City to look at a 3-bed house down by the station that needed work doing to it. It was down at 130k, it would be worth 150k tops done up and needed in the region of 35k work doing to it. I offered 105k, which was lower than the offer they already had on the table but I think that 90k would be a more realistic offer. To do all that work, even if you project managed it and get 10k out if your lucky is not what one would call a renovation project. The house was in an excellent location, near the station and the city but still, the top price would be 150k.
We spent the whole evening looking up house prices on the internet in Ely and Littleport. We made graphs and tables to check out what costs what and why. Littleport definitely had bigger, nicer places for your money but Littleport is the middle of nowhere with a railway station, it doesn’t have any real facilities. It does have a big sports centre according to one bloke selling a house there, but without seeing it, who knows if he knows what a big sports centre really looks like apart from anything else.
According to the surveyor, Littleport is the first to go down in price and the last to go up, which makes it a dodgy place to try and invest in.
We do still have an hour’s consultation with Fiona who might be able to help us decide what’s a good way to invest. At the moment we have money from VC but we are still wobbly about going ahead with Littleport. Toby says we should make a list of all the questions we need to ask her to make the most of the hour.
There’s another house in Ely I like the look of but it’s too expensive right now, I’ve requested to view it and we could always put a low bid in and see what happens. It’s a 3 bed terrace backing on to the park by the cathedral. It would be a wonderful place to live, the house is small for a detached but actually bigger than most 3 beds, certainly in Ely. It’s 170k, which is the top of our money. If it does need work doing and we could put in offer at 155 we would be on to something. Apart from that there doesn’t seem to be much on the market at a decent price to renovate. Patience is a vurtue as they say.

First week over, it’s been a great week, I love the job and it’s been an extraordinary experience having the handover done by someone who loves her job and makes the effort to provide excellent service. She’s going to be a hard act to follow but I think they definatley have the right woman for the job.
It’s really nice coming in with Toby in the Car, we get to spend time together on the way to and from work, an hour each way so, so far, anything I think of I needed to say or ask or the like, we get to talk about. I think it’s really good and even better for our relationship, we are often busy in the evening especially with buying the houses that there’s not much time before bed to spend together.
It was really funny yesterday, I went to landmark in the evening and Toby came down to the station at gone 11pm to pick me up, I was greeted with a warm passionate kiss and he said he’d missed me. It was lovely. I got some good coaching on my agreement and was flying on the way home, everybody seemed related to me, I jabbered on with an amazing 59 year old Cambridge native who is a Crane Driver, at the moment on Regent Street and was on his way home to his wife, having a beer and sharing about his life and asking me about mine. It was a wonderful journey. Then to have Toby be so lovely too, something shifted around me when I stopped being upset and resigned about things. Anything is possible.
We had fish and Chips tonight with Dan, Ellen was out with her friends. We shared a beer and afterwards I fell asleep on the sofa in front of the telly, caught bits of Batman and Robin (totally perfect if you don’t want to see a film worth staying awake for). Toby was looking at houses for sale in Ely and there is one down by the station with all the right things – 3bed, needs work, big garden for 130k. I think we might like it to live in, then again it might be perfect to rent out.
Littleport should still go ahead, providing, of course that the vendors agree to pay for the removal of the asbestos that the surveyor found yesterday in the out house. It may not be asbestos, it will need to be tested, which costs £350 just to test for and then thousands to remove if it is. I think we’d be justified in getting the vendor to pay, we hope they will.
Looking forward to a good weekend!

First day went really well, it’s a really nice place to work. While I was cleaning my teeth I remarked to myself how this place reminds me of NCT. It’s totally different but something is the same. A kind of attitude, generosity, commitment, still human. Hard to explain. It’s positive anyway. The office is really big and open with nothing breaking the view, all the desks are in sets of 6, 3 on each side facing each other with a partition that is about shoulder height as you are sitting so you can see everybody. There are a couple of partitioned off bits where the MD, FD etc have their space. Their PA’s are among us too, they are very nice on first impressions. Coffee is free and there’s plenty of space for my bike. The computer is XP, which I’ve used quite a bit now, they use all the good ideas I’ve picked up from working in different places, they seem to use them all! Or at least a lot that I can see, plus a couple I didn’t know about. I like that, everyone is working to make everyone else’s job work and appreciates that we all have a work load to get through.
Halfway through the morning, a call came through saying there was a package at reception for me. I went down and got it, came back up with a big box with thick purple ribbon round it and an enormous purple bow. As I opened the box, an enormous balloon floated out and up on a ribbon attached to some chocolates. On the balloon it said congratulations Christine! I passed the chocolates round and remarked that at least everyone would know my name. Very nice touch I think. That’s what I call going beyond customer expectations.
The weekend at Landmark was all about excellent management, this place is definitely got a big handle on excellent management.

Had a brilliant day today with my Dad, he was well impressed with Ely Cathedral, that made me really happy. When he arrived it was snowing, it was pretty damn cold here. We spent most of the day inside the cathedral looking around. It was really interesting and I enjoyed it as much as taking mum round last year.
I am typing in bed again, and my tickly cough is back. I only seem to get it at night, it’s really irritating. It kept me up last night until I found the tickly cough pastilles and I’m back on them now. I forgot to buy night nurse today. I’m not sure if I’ll find the opportunity tomorrow either.
Tomorrow is my first day at my new job. I’ve got my Landmark agreement in the evening so it will be a very full day.
I think I’ve got my stuff prepared for the morning, I’ll be on the 8.26 to Cambridge with Toby.
Dad didn’t do landmark this weekend due to lack of sleep last week, he got there and was too tired to take it in. I think he’s had a brilliant weekend in London, going round the VandA, British Museum and Forbidden Planet. I think he’s just had a nice holiday!
Plus a day out in Ely, what more could you want?

This was taken in a cafe in Ely called Pure. It was OK and we did have the cosiest corner. It was a wonderful day, I know Dad enjoyed it too.

This is an email between Nicola and me, I thought it quite telling, I'm interested when I look back on this where we will all be. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Hey Nik,
Glad things are going well with you too.
I love your Dutch 'moppie'style. I can understand every word, you'll be glad to know, don't ask me to write back in Dutch though, any style!.
Wurgen!!! good word. I presume that's throttle in old speak. Yeah well, many a time and many a time to come. Anyway, keep your humanity and remember, that amazing, accepting, generous, straight talking person youare with your friends - that's who you need to be with mumsy too. She may be a battle axe, but she is battle axe with ownership to V'weide 2and all inside along with daddykins. So be nice to them, they broughtyou into this world.
I've got a job!!! I went for an interview (only my second so far, so pretty good going, I say) through an agency. I am a Bids and Quotes Administrator, which means I compile, collate, present and send the bids and quotes from the sales and marketing guys that go to clients. The product is the new digi incrypted police/emergency service radio and the clients are the emergency services all over the world. The competitors are Nokia and Motorola (our headsets are Siemens, re-branded as Sepura) and the quotes need to all arrive together and hopefully ours will bethe best. It's a 5 month contract at 17k a year (about 1100 quid amonth, which is good) and I get 2 days off a month, which is also good considering if I'd been a temp I'd have been on 950 a month with no daysoff - if I took a day off, I wouldn't get paid!
The house in Littleport is coming along, we need to instruct surveyors, solicitors and mortgage men, by March at the latest we will have the keys. The plan is to do it up and sell it or rent it out depending on what works best, then buy a place for us and buy another place and rentit out before the wedding, it will also pay for the wedding! Once wehave done it, I will explain it to you! It is ambitious but not impossible, infact it's very doable, it just takes work.
RE: Hello lovely

I interviewed today in Cambridge for a job as a Bids and Quotations Administrator for a company who make the digi police radios. It's a 5 month contract at 17k p.a. with 2 days holiday a month which is nice! It's near Toby's work so we'll travel in together, which is also nice!
They even were happy to let me start in Tuesday so I can see my Dad who's coming to Ely for the first time!

Instead of a bath, I went down stairs to make a coffee, Dan was off the computer so I got all my emails and applications done in time to eat when Toby got home about 6.30.
I feel much better, I'm still contemplating the bath...
I feel much better, I'm still contemplating the bath...
Tuesday was brilliant, I went up to London, showed Obi round the flat, he was happy, transferred the funds and I gave him the keys about 6pm. Exchanged and complete, all done. We now have over 60k in our joint account which we need to stick in a savings account asap. It shouldn’t be too long before the house in Littleport will be ours, I guess about 6 – 8 weeks.
Yesterday was good too, I did really well in a typing test and the agencies seemed to be very positive about my CV.
Another good thing about yesterday was cycling round Cambridge too, it was nice to get a feel for the place. It’s funny really, my moving here has been the most relaxed I’ve ever done. Toby’s had to get stuck in straight away and seems to have a lot of the responsibility. I hope things will balance out. I Like not working but I hate the pressure on Toby and him feeling like he’s the only one keeping things going. Saying that, 2 years ago, Toby had 6 months off and I was working 10 hour days at the gym and feeling stressed so I suppose everything is just a phase, I think we do play as a team.
Toby’s parents are being great, I hope I’m not too much of a burden on them, I know they are routing for me getting work as soon as I can, it must be weird having your daughter in law to be floating around the house while your son is out at work. I need to be on the computer and Dan needs it for his work too so I either need to get in first thing in the morning (yeah right, I’m crap at getting up this time of year, let alone off my own back) or when ever he’s doing something else. In the evenings, Toby wants to hog it too so I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself. It will work out, so I’m just going to get off it and I will get it done.
The very first agency I registered with a week and a half ago has come back with an interview for tomorrow. They’ve put me forward 4 times now, which is more than the others who have only got as far as a 5 hour temp job and an interview for a job I didn't say I wanted and left all parties wondering how the thing came about. This it the first job I'm interested in to become an interview. It sounds pretty good, enough variety and within cycling distance in Cambridge so I’ll either get the train or go in with Toby in the Car, it’s round the corner from him too.
I went into town this morning with Ellen after hurriedly checking my emails, changing all my addresses via the internet and over the phone, responding to some agencies and very quickly getting dressed. They had been up earlier than I thought and were dressed, fed and ready to start the day before I was even out of bed. I thought by jumping on the computer before they were up I’d still get things done despite it being 9.30am and not early by any means. I’d agreed to go into town with Ellen the day before so when she said we’ll go when you’re ready I knew that it would be prudent to be ready quickly. Still, I got what there was to do done and apart from skipping a shower, it was still fairly dignified. They had coffee while I ate my cornflakes then Ellen and I left. Just up the road is a little beauty salon, Ellen wanted her eyebrows and nails done, they could do it there and then so I decided to get my eyebrows done too, it cost 6 quid which isn’t too bad, I’ve been ‘plucking’ up the courage to do it for a while. Now I know what shape they should be, I can do my own periodic plucking. I think she did a good job, it remains to be seen what Toby thinks, it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t notice anyway. We picked up residents tickets for the Cathedral, checked out Chinese buffets for Sunday (Dan’s birthday), wondered round the market, a couple of shops, and trudged back against the wind for a lateish lunch. I’m up in our room, writing onto the lap top to transfer onto the blog when time allows, this is the best way to still keep the blog without regular internet access, clever eh?
I’m not sure I’ve deserved it but I really fancy a bath.

Monday 17th Jan 22.24
Bit of a disappointing day. The interview went badly, if only because I was interviewing for a different job to the one they were offering me. I could of happily worked for them but not as a telemarketer. There wasn’t even much point in taking it on as a job to lead to other possible jobs, I would make a crap telemarketer. I don’t have the resilience to rejection. I like more satisfaction.
I’m not quite sure how I steered so close to sales. It definitely isn’t my cup of tea unless the customers are responding to advertising, then I’m really good. Maybe that isn’t so difficult anyway.
Toby was up to his neck in anxiety this afternoon. The buyer of our flat has just requested to see the flat before exchange and completion, which means if he is not satisfied when he sees it he could still pull out. I think we are ambivalent now that we have worked out that financially, it would cost us the same as waiting the two months for our mortgage to finish it’s two year period. At present the redemption charges this close to it’s end will be quite high. I hope, personally, he doesn’t pull out but it wouldn’t be the end of the world and noone would die. Poor Toby has had to deal with the stress of it all.
I hope that this week we have sold the flat and next week I start a job. A job I’ll enjoy, short or long term.

Well we moved out of London today. The flat is empty all but curtains and clean. I will pop in on Tuesday to pick up the last of the post (re-direction starts on wednesday). We complete on Tuesday.
Yesterday we loaded up a large Luton with a tail lift with the washing machine, fridge, a zillion other things boxed to go and a zillion things that seemed to appear out of nowhere on the day that ended up here and there in boxes and bags. I will be sorting them out this week.
It's been a couple of weeks of bad chest infection, applying for jobs, registering at agencies and packing and unpacking. Not to mention the usual Landmark roller coaster of Love. I lead a brilliant intro on Friday night and had a great time, new format, new shares, new possibilities.
Tomorrow I have my first Interview through an agency. I'm quite excited and I think this might be the job for me. My name with this agency is in good condition, I did 5 hours temping for the same agency in my first week up in Ely - the minutes for a meeting. Not just any meeting, the East of England assembley deciding how to Divvy (new east anglian term) up the dosh they'll be getting from the government for housing. For some reason I found it fascinating, which must have reflected in my minute taking because I got excellent marks. Well thankfully the day I registered at this agency the temp lady offered me this, which I did and did well and the permanent lady offerered me a role where my interview is tomorrow. The only issue being it's in the middle of the fens about 2 miles outside Ely and there is no public transport. Me loving the opportunity for a light country bike ride every day said yes and the rest is yet to come. All I know so far is that it's a sales and customer service role, not at the bottom, that uses alot of my talents and experience (they liked my CV) and it's with Lifefitness, who make my favorite fitness equipment and are a fortune 500 company and their only UK base is Queen Adelaide. I've examined the website and apart from the fact that they are the world leader in exercise machines, I still don't know much else. Tomorrow will tell. Ellen's offered to give me a lift so I don't have to cycle to my interview so I make a good impression.
We will have the contents of life in M & D's (Toby's parents) Garage for the next 6 -8 weeks before we move into our next property, a large 3 bed terrace in Littleport. In need of central heating and a good re-decorate which will hopefully be our first East Anglian house do up for profit of many.
It's nice to be up here, no regrets on leaving London. New beginnings all round.
